Media Advisory/Photo Opportunity, Feb 2: First Book Canada distributes over 45,000 books

For Immediate Release

Vancouver, BC, January 30, 2012: This week, First Book Canada is distributing more than 45,000 books for children from low income families in communities throughout the province. More than 50 schools and community based-programs across the Greater Vancouver Area will receive hundreds of new, high-quality books for the children they serve. Cameray Child and Family Services is just one of the groups who will be receiving books. They will distribute the books to clients on Thursday, February 2 from 11:45 to 12:45.  Media are invited to attend.

The books were donated to First Book Canada by Owlkids Books, Orca Book Publishers and Raincoast Books.

Decoda Literacy Solutions, BC’s literacy organization, assisted in this distribution by sharing information about this opportunity with its networks across BC. Through the power of Decoda’s robust literacy network, 124 groups from BC registered with First Book Canada over the past month, making this the largest new book distribution First Book Canada has ever done in Canada.

What: The books donated by First Book Canada will be distributed in Cameray’s “Family Literacy Circle” program, where children 18 months to 5 years read books, sing songs, and play literacy games in order to help the children build literacy skills in the early years. In this group, parents are encouraged to read at home with their children by giving one free book to each family for every 10 books they read to their child at home each week.

When: Thursday, February 2, from 11:45 to 12:45

Where: Cameray Child and Family Services
#203-5623 Imperial Street
Burnaby BC, V5J 1G1
