A Message from Maureen Kehler, Acting Executive Director

As we celebrate Literacy Month and International Literacy Day, I want to take a moment to introduce myself as Decoda’s Acting Executive Director.

For more than 14 years, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside communities across British Columbia to strengthen literacy. During that time, I’ve built meaningful relationships with Literacy Outreach Coordinators, Community Adult Literacy practitioners, government partners, Indigenous organizations, and community organizations. What has inspired me most is seeing the difference literacy makes; not just for individuals, but for families and entire communities.

Stepping into this role is both an honour and a responsibility that I don’t take lightly. Decoda is entering an exciting new chapter, and I’m looking forward to working with our staff, Board, consultants, partners, and supporters to build a stronger, more sustainable organization that continues to serve communities throughout British Columbia.

I truly believe that literacy changes lives. It opens doors to education and employment, helps people navigate everyday life with confidence, strengthens families, and creates more connected, resilient communities. That’s why I’m so passionate about the work we do and the people who make it possible.

Throughout Literacy Month, by giving generously towards the Decoda Literacy Month Campaign, Your Gift. Their Next Chapter., you will help the learners, volunteers, educators, Literacy Outreach Coordinators, and community partners who make literacy happen every day. International Literacy Day is an important reminder that literacy is more than reading and writing; it’s the foundation for lifelong learning, opportunity, and belonging.

Don’t forget that you’re a learner too. Every one of us continues to learn through reading, listening, asking questions, and sharing knowledge with others.
