Events across BC celebrate Family Literacy Week 2025

Families, schools, libraries, literacy organizations and communities across BC celebrate Family Literacy Week, January 26–February 2, 2025, with activities, events and contests.

Many organizations collaborate to offer free or low-cost family activities and events this week, like ice and roller skating, snowshoeing, swimming, magic shows, puppet shows, parties, museum visits, story walks, crafts, trivia, yoga and even family boxing! Also look for contests, free books and literacy information and resources.

Some community activities highlight this year’s Family Literacy Day and Week theme “Learn to be Green, Together.” There are scavenger hunts, meal kits, garden kits, nature bingo, guided walks, bee houses, nature crafts, tree planting and more.

Okanagan communities celebrate the Beem Credit Union Unplug and Play Week during Family Literacy Week, with many community partners supporting more than 50 activities across the region that encourage families to put down screens and get active together.

“We love seeing so many organizations and businesses working together for literacy and celebrating family literacy in their communities,” says Decoda program manager Maureen Kehler. “I’m excited to see the variety of events and activities happening across BC! Family activities and play naturally build literacy skills and learning while strengthening bonds.”

What is Family Literacy?

It’s about families learning together through daily activities. Children learn vocabulary, numeracy and skills and parents get to join in the learning.

“Family literacy is the way parents, children and extended family members use literacy at home and in the community. It occurs naturally during the routines of daily life and helps children and adults get things done.” – Hayden & Sanders, 2017

About Family Literacy Week

Family Literacy Week in BC is a chance to highlight and celebrate the importance of family literacy – or learning together. Expanding on ABC Life Literacy’s Family Literacy Day on January 27, British Columbia celebrates family literacy for a week.

Each year, Decoda Literacy provides themed family activities for a variety of ages, a contest and social media materials to promote awareness and encourage families to learn and play together.
