Events across BC celebrate Family Literacy Week 2026

Families, schools, libraries, literacy organizations and communities across BC celebrate Family Literacy Week, January 25–February 1, 2026, with activities, events and contests.

Many organizations collaborate to offer free or low-cost family activities and events this week, like Literacy Fairs, reading challenges, StoryWalks, family cooking classes, author readings, magic shows, games nights, interactive activities, crafts, and more! Also, look for contests, free books and literacy information and resources.

Some community activities highlight this year’s Family Literacy Day and Week theme “Make mealtime family learning time.”

What is Family Literacy?

It’s about families learning together through daily activities. Children learn vocabulary, numeracy and skills and parents get to join in the learning.

“Family literacy is the way parents, children and extended family members use literacy at home and in the community. It occurs naturally during the routines of daily life and helps children and adults get things done.” – Hayden & Sanders, 2017

About Family Literacy Week

Family Literacy Week in BC is a chance to highlight and celebrate the importance of family literacy – or learning together. Expanding on ABC Life Literacy’s Family Literacy Day on January 27, British Columbia celebrates family literacy for a week.

Each year, Decoda Literacy provides themed family activities for a variety of ages, a contest and social media materials to promote awareness and encourage families to learn and play together.
