Gathering Place Community Centre Library – A Vital Hub in Downtown Vancouver – Celebrating 30 years!

Today, Marnie from the Gathering Place Community Centre Library is guest writing to you about her library. 

Located at 609 Helmcken Street, the Gathering Place Community Centre Library is a low-barrier facility and has served Vancouver’s Downtown South community since 1995, offering a welcoming and accessible sanctuary for those experiencing homelessness, poverty or other vulnerabilities. The library is open Monday to Friday 9am-4:45pm (closed 12-1 for lunch).

The Library

Often referred to as the Reading Room, the library is a small but vibrant space run by dedicated staff and volunteers offering friendly, personalized service in place of a traditional large-branch structure. It houses thousands of books & DVDs as well as newspapers, magazines, crosswords, sudoku, laptops for going online and printing too!

Members of the Gathering Place (included with annual membership – currently free) may check out books and DVDs using a membership card issued at the second-floor Reception Counter. The collection spans a wide range of subjects:

  • Fiction: classics, contemporary, mystery, thriller, fantasy, horror, graphic novels, biography, poetry & more
  • Non‑fiction: science, history, art, politics, literature, social sciences, health and wellness, crafts & more
  • Multimedia: DVDs – new releases, classic movies, comedy, action, drama, horror, sci-fi, documentaries & series
  • Magazines: subscriptions to 15+ popular titles
  • Newspapers: The Vancouver Sun and The Province
  • Services: printing, photocopying essential documents, faxing, free senior guides in multiple languages as well as free newcomer guides in multiple languages and quick-reference guides to local community services.

Activities & Drop‑Ins

The library hosts several popular weekly drop-in events:

  • Book Club: Wednesdays, 10:30am-Noon, all readers welcome
  • Writing Group: Wednesdays, 1:30pm-3pm, all writers welcome – beginner to advanced
  • Conversation Circle: Wednesdays, 3:30pm-5pm, ideal for practicing conversational English
  • Cold Case/True Crime: Fridays 1:30pm-3pm, viewer discretion advised
  • Digi‑lab Tech Help: Fridays 4pm-7pm, a pop-up computer lab offering one‑on‑one assistance with devices, tech and digital skills, as well as drop-in online activities, job searches, resumes and printing.

 Community Role & Impact

Within the broader Gathering Place Community Centre, the library is part of a network of essential services including:

  • A low‑cost cafeteria serving hot meals three times a day open 365 days a year
  • Health and hygiene facilities, including free showers, laundry, & weight room open 365 days a year
  • Diverse community programming across arts, fitness, music and wellness
  • Adult learning centre Adult education programs offered by the Vancouver School Board, open Sept-Jun
  • The library is well-known for its warm, hands-on service – volunteers and patrons alike note the sense of community and personal attention that the smaller-scale setting offers. From poetry readings and writing groups to engaging programming, the Library fosters creativity, connection and belonging.
