Improve math skills with ABC Everyday Numbers
– Guest post by ABC Life Literacy Canada.
ABC Everyday Numbers is a numeracy program that offers free resources and workshops to adult learners looking to improve their math skills. Whether someone is looking to get their high school diploma or simply wants to build math confidence, ABC Everyday Numbers brings math to everyday life!
Why is numeracy important?
Numeracy skills are essential for everyday tasks like figuring out how many minutes until a train arrives, adjusting a recipe to serve more people, or making sure to receive the correct change after a purchase. Poor numeracy skills can have a negative impact on people financially, socially, and professionally, and it may even affect their health and well-being.
A variety of math resources for learners and practitioners
ABC Everyday Numbers currently offers three workbooks on a variety of math topics, including “Playing with patterns”, “Multiply without memorizing” and “Estimating”. These topics are also offered as online courses on the ABC Skills Hub, an online learning portal that offers asynchronous, at-home delivery of ABC Life Literacy Canada’s adult literacy programs. Additional workbooks and courses from the ABC Everyday Numbers program will be added in the coming months.
Learners can sign up to create a free account on the ABC Skills Hub at abcskillshub.ca. Users are able to complete online courses at their own pace, save their work in progress, and download course content and helpful reminders of what they’ve learned. Practitioners can also create free accounts on the ABC Skills Hub and set up virtual classrooms for learners.
Bring the program to your organization
ABC Everyday Numbers is completely free and accessible for anyone to use.
Participating organizations can sign up to host as many workshops as they like, delivered in person, or virtually. Host organizations can request printed resources for their learners and also receive $50 for each workshop held.
ABC Life Literacy Canada provides free facilitator training to groups across the country who deliver ABC Everyday Numbers. Training encourages workshop delivery in an inclusive and engaging manner that facilitates discussion. Literacy practitioners do not need to be trained in foundational math instruction to deliver this program.
Organizations that want to host workshops can simply sign up at abceverydaynumbers.ca. From there, they will be connected to a regional representative, who will speak with them about their upcoming workshop, and provide all the necessary training and materials.
