Order of Adjectives

Which would you say – “a red nice sweater” or “a nice red sweater”? When there’s more than one adjective before a noun, which one comes first? Do you know why?

There’s a grammar rule about the order of adjectives that a lot of us follow without even realizing it. When there’s more than one adjective before a noun, the order is usually: opinion, size, physical quality, shape, age, colour, origin, material, type, purpose. Examples of what this means can be found in English Grammar Today from the online Cambridge Dictionary.

This video lesson explains adjective order in English. It can be a handy tool if you are teaching English Language learners online.
