Summer Reads: Bonding Over Books With My Teen

Join us every Friday in July and August and learn about the Decoda staff’s summer reading picks. Today Aliza Dhungana, Program Manager, is sharing her summer reading pick.

As summer arrives, I’m reminded of how much I cherish the time I spend reading with my daughter, Aadhya. Now that she’s fifteen, our busy lives have made it more challenging to find time to read together. Yet, our conversations about books have become more meaningful. We talk about how reading is more than just a pastime — it’s a gateway to new insights and new ways of thinking.

Aadhya loves to read just before bed or while watching the sunset at the beach. She enjoys a variety of genres, but she particularly gravitates towards mysteries, crime, and thrillers. Recently, we discussed a book she’s currently reading, Fit to Die by Daniel Kalla. This book delves into dark secrets within hospitals, the psychology of people obsessed with body image, and the shocking revelations about the diet industry and toxic diet pills. The suspenseful storyline, combined with its compelling blend of drama and courage, makes it a gripping read.

Although our reading habits and preferences may differ, the joy of exploring new stories and ideas remains a shared passion. This has become a special part of our relationship, whether we’re discussing our latest reads or simply enjoying a book in our own space. Taking time to read together with your teenagers or simply discussing a favourite read can deepen the connection and provide meaningful opportunities for reflection with your children.

Enjoy your reading!
