A message from Margaret, Executive Director

For Family Literacy Week 2022, we chose the theme “Let’s Connect! Care * Play * Listen.” We know that learning happens when children connect with people, places, ideas and things.

Connecting with others is important for our social, emotional and physical health. It is how we build strong relationships and create trust.

We extend our sincere thanks to the Province of British Columbia for raising awareness by proclaiming Family Literacy Week in BC.

Family Literacy Week in BC

Family Literacy Week celebrations are taking place throughout the province. I encourage you to read about some of the exciting community activities, events and contests near you. Visit our events page to see how you can get involved in online, at home and outdoor activities in your community.

I plan on getting outside and playing with my grandkids, or, if the weather is bad, we will go to the pool.

For more ways to participate, download our age-specific activity sheets and enter The Family Literacy Week Photo Contest.

What’s New at Decoda

Part of Decoda’s work is to offer literacy practitioners professional development opportunities like workshops, webinars and training sessions. In this issue, Maureen Kehler, program manager, talks about her role in supporting the wonderful 100 Literacy Outreach Coordinators who work in over 400 communities across BC.

In other Decoda news, we welcomed Manmeet Bhatia as a new member of the Board at our Annual General Meeting in December. Manmeet brings almost 25 years of experience in the financial services industry. At the AGM, we celebrated our successes over the last fiscal year as highlighted in our 2020-21 Annual Report.

On January 27, all of Canada will celebrate ABC Life Literacy’s Family Literacy Day.

I hope that you will find time to have fun with your family – on Family Literacy Day and throughout Family Literacy Week!

Sincerely,

Margaret
